Artists Equity Honors Thora Jacobson:
Making a Difference for Visual Fine Artists

ARTISTS EQUITY HONORS THORA JACOBSON, for her service as the Executive Director of the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial. Their quality programs for artists have made a significant contribution to art and artists of the region.

In 1978, as program administrator, Jacobson initiated the Challenge Exhibitions at Fleisher, which have become a highly respected series for younger, unaffiliated artists in the Philadelphia area.

In 1991 and 1992 Ms. Jacobson worked with co-producers Mary Griffin and Carlota Schoolman on a series of artist residencies, performances and consultancies entitled Arranged Introductions: Art Works in Different Places. In the past twelve years, Jacobson has turned her attention to strategic partnerships with community-based organizations for exhibitions and educational programs as a vehicle for rethinking the multiple meanings of culture and creativity.

Jacobson also contributed to the catalogue Twenty Philadelphia Artists: Celebrating Fleisher Challenge at 20 for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with an historical essay on the region's artists and institutions.

In addition, Ms. Jacobson has worked as a community arts organizer, a management/ development consultant, free-lance curator, juror for numerous art exhibitions and competitions in the Philadelphia region, and peer panelist for governmental funding agencies and foundations.

In recognition of these contributions which advance the careers of visual fine artists, The 2006 ARTISTS EQUITY AWARD will be given to Ms. Jacobson.

ARTISTS EQUITY HONORS JUDY HERMAN, Executive Director of the Main Line Art Center!

The ARTISTS EQUITY AWARD was given to Ms. Herman for her dedication to the arts and artists in the Delaware Valley.

In her post as Executive Director Ms. Herman helps to bring art in the form of lectures, trips, and special events to children, adults, and families. The activities are designed to educate, inspire and promote the enjoyment and appreciation of art. Ms. Herman also supports the development of artists and the growth of audiences for the arts. The Main line Art Center under the direction of Ms. Herman reaches over 7,000 students and enthusiastic art viewers each year.

Artists Equity is a nonprofit business association for professional visual artists. It¹s mission is to advance the interests of those who work in the visual arts. AE seeks to speak as one voice for the visual artist in the communities where we live and inspire those communities to embrace living artists and their art.
